Phase Rotation Indicator Description

The SPD480 is and induction disk type phase rotation indicator which is used to identify the rotation of three-phase systems as either clockwise or counter-clockwise.  When the Red, White, and Blue leads are connected to Line 1 ( Phase A), Line 2 (Phase B), and Line 3 (Phase C) respectively, the disk rotates in the clockwise direction.  A phase reversal will cause the disk to rotate in the counter-clockwise direction.

Voltage Range 110 - 480 VAC

Frequency  40 - 70 Hertz

Phase Rotation Indicator Applications

• Verification of proper system rotation on new feeder extensions.
   

• Verification of proper rotation after installation or replacement of transformer banks.
   

• Determining phase rotation on the secondary of Potential Transformers (PT's) for correct installation of metering and relaying equipment.
   

• Checking phase rotation to verify the correctness of field power measurements taken for system load studies.

Personal Favorite

The first rotation meter I had occasion to use, some 40 years ago, was an induction disk type indicator and it was a great piece of test equipment.  In the intervening years, I've probably had a half-dozen newer, electronic-type indicators - with lights - and they never last.  I was pleased to discover this induction-disk unit by TPI.
