Electrical Fundamentals

Synopsis - This course is a comprehensive introduction to basic
electrical theory and components. Students will gain a familiarity with
electrical equipment construction and operation, and its application in
industry. The program will be extremely helpful to individuals who are just
beginning a career in electrical work or who require some knowledge of
electrical principles and equipment to better perform their primary
responsibilities. The program contains a good balance of theory and
practical considerations. Short lectures are followed by in-depth hands-on
lab work. One full day is devoted to motor control lab work. This seminar
is a excellent prerequisite for other Kilowatt Classroom courses.
Who Should Attend - Apprentice Electricians and Instrument
Technicians, Mechanics, Multi-Skill Maintenance Personnel, Plant Equipment
Operators, Field Service Technicians, Supervisors.
Curriculum - Electrical Basics:
Electrical/hydraulic analogy, comparison of direct and alternating current,
analyzing direction of current flow. Electrical Terms:
Voltage, current, resistance, and power in electrical circuits.
Electrical Symbols for Formulas and Prints:
Symbols, types of electrical drawings, print reading practice problems.
Beginning Electrical Calculations: Basic
algebra review, number prefixes, Ohms Law, power calculations.
Making Electrical Measurements: Meter settings,
measurement tolerances, safety. Sources of Electrical
Energy: Understanding how electricity is generated, sources of energy
lab work. Resistance in Electrical Circuits:
Properties of conductors and insulators, resistance terminology, resistance
measurement lab. Basic DC Circuit Theory:
Series, parallel, and series-parallel circuits. DC circuit lab work.
Introduction to AC Circuit Theory: Sine wave
fundamentals, magnetism, inductance, capacitance, and impedance.
Introduction to AC Power Systems: Single-phase;
three-phase, Delta and Wye, AC Power fundamentals.
Introduction to Electrical Equipment: Switches, relays, transformers,
motors, generators, lighting systems. Introduction to
System Protection: Fuses, circuit breakers, MCP's, and overload
relays. Motor Control Basics: Motor starters,
motor control centers (MCC’s), motor control lab work.
Electrical Safety: Lockout / tag-out procedures, troubleshooting
energized circuits.
Prerequisites - None
Included Materials - All participants will receive specially
developed text and lab material from The Industrial Electrician's
Notebook™.
Student Provided Equipment - Attendees will need a calculator and a
digital multimeter (volts, ohms, milliamps). Also required are safety
glasses and typical electricians' hand tools for the lab work. Attendees
are encouraged to bring schematic diagrams of equipment they encounter in
the field.
